Montefalco
The Balcony of Umbria.
Montefalco lies in the province of Perugia, between the regional capital and Spoleto, on the hill that rises between the Topino and Clitunno rivers. It is this vantage point that earned it the name Balcony of Umbria. La Rocca is inside the historic centre: everything worth seeing is within walking distance.
From Coccorone to Montefalco
The name is said to come from Emperor Frederick II, who noticed a great many hawks among these hills: the ancient name of Coccorone became Montefalco.
On the Via Francigena
The town stands along the Via Francigena, one of the roads that linked France to Rome, and was conceived as a place of rest and hospitality on the long pilgrimage.
